Sewing Machines for Beginners (My Opinions)

You are ready to start your sewing journey! Now it's time to choose a machine that will help you in your journey. I feel comfortable sharing machines that I have used (and loved) or that I have heard from other sewists to be great.

I begun with the Baby Lock Brilliant, but there are other choices for a range of budgets. I knew that I wanted sewing to be my job, so I wanted a machine that could be reliable and have many options. If you are just sewing for pleasure or if you are just starting out, you can start with a machine that won't cause such a dent in your budget. Always remember to check with loved ones, friends, co workers, or even quilt shops to see if they have a machine that you can use before buying one. Here are some great options when you are ready to buy:

Serger

I have been using the Brother 1034D (purchased in 2020) and it has been working wonderfully for me! There are higher end sergers available, but to begin, I believe that the Brother 1034D is a great place to start.

This next one is a mix of serger and overlocker. I have been keeping my eye on this one but I haven't had the chance to try it just yet!

Industrial Machines

If you have been sewing for a while and are looking for a stronger machine for heavier fabrics like heavy vinyls and leather, I would suggest considering an industrial machine. I have heard wonderful things about brands like Juki and Thor. The one I decided to go with was the Sailrite Deluxe Fabricator. I loved the look of it and the reviews it has. I can only speak great things about the machine and the customer support I have received from Sailrite. They also have smaller, portable versions that seem like great options too if you want to test the waters.

If there is something I could leave you with writing this post (apart from sewing machine recommendations) is that your sewing journey is unique to you. You will see many creatives in the social media space and I encourage you to be inspired, but please don't compare yourself to anyone. Read blogs, watch videos, and practice. The only way to get better and keep learning is to try it, so just sew.

Much love!
